Gardening to Give Back

Sometimes you learn something about your colleagues that is so pleasantly surprising, it just makes you smile. Perhaps they volunteer in a meaningful way in the community. Maybe they’ve had a remarkable career, or maybe they grow their own food and share it with their neighbors and coworkers. In Wade Nelson, we found all three!

The Human Side Of Celanese – We’re Committed To KeepSAFE

Human is the theme of our recently released stewardship report – appropriately named, as our stewardship performance impacts humans in many ways. Personal safety, process safety, and environmental performance all impact our employees, contractors, neighbors and the communities where we operate. Stewardship performance is closely aligned with our interaction and impact on humans…

Collaborative Process Safety: How To Steal Shamelessly And Get Away With It!

I have the coolest job at Celanese. In process safety, we save lives, protect the environment and preserve all our jobs by keeping bad things from happening in our manufacturing plants. This may seem like a rather bold statement, but consider the toxic gas release that occurred in Bhopal, India in 1984. The company which had the incident no longer exist. The chemical industry was transformed in a positive way through regulations and voluntary improvements to the way we design, build, operate and maintain our manufacturing facilities…

A Human Difference: The Chemistry Behind Our Culture Of Stewardship

As former vice president of stewardship and operational excellence, I’ve had the opportunity to experience stewardship from a unique perspective. Having been with Celanese for less than two years, I’m impressed by our extensive commitment to our stewardship culture: worker safety, environmental protection and the commitment to caring for precious natural resources. Among similar companies globally, Celanese rates in the top decile in the world for measured stewardship performance.

Stewardship often brings two things to mind: safety and environmental sustainability – and Celanese is well-known for handling both with diligence and care. But at Celanese, stewardship means more than just avoiding incidents at our facilities and it means more than just protecting the environment. It also means caring for our people, our community, our planet and our customers…

Celanese Celebrates Earth Day

On April 22, the world unites to celebrate the Earth. Earth Day started in 1970 as an initiative to create appreciation for the environment, support sustainability, maintain biodiversity and emphasize the environmental issues that concern us as humans. Now, more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

Increased demand for energy and sustainability have become key issues – or opportunities –  due to the challenges and limitations we are dealing with.  Following this approach and aligning to the Celanese values, Improving the World and Being Sustainable, the Celanese Global Energy Team is celebrating this day as a permanent and sustainable tradition.

Energy At Work And At Home

Why do we focus on energy reduction at work?  Our manufacturing processes require significant amounts of energy to make our products — equivalent to the annual electricity use of about 1.3 MM US homes — which is why we are committed to maximizing energy efficiency and the reduction of associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Online Shopping Tips That We All Tend To Forget During The Holidays

Online shopping has become the preferred method of many holiday shoppers. With the introduction of Cyber Monday, retailers are providing deep discounts and easy ways for shoppers to find the perfect gift for friends and family. Since I’ve started my role in IT Security, I’ve begun to look at online safety from a different perspective. We often think of identity theft and Internet security as some distant thought, but your information (and in some extreme cases, your financial livelihood) can be compromised with a single click.

Growing And Learning At Celanese

It’s taken me some time to get used to the safety culture here at Celanese, but I’ve learned plenty about how to do better over the last few months. While I’ve slipped, tripped and fallen on everything from trains, planes and automobiles, I am excited to say that I haven’t had an incident this week so far. I’ve been accident free while preparing for the day, commuting and moving about the office. It’s funny how quickly things can change.

Every day I’ve woken up and found the right shoes to wear and checked the weather before heading out the door. I’ve been driving slowly on my way to work, being sure to check traffic beforehand. I’ve even rearranged my workspace for improved ergonomics.

When I began writing this blog series my goal was simply to have a better safety record, and I think I’m headed toward success. With your feedback—and help from the people that I’m lucky to call my team mates—I’ve learned plenty about the importance of safety at home and in the office.

Five Commuting And Travel Tips

What did your most hectic commute look like? Or your worst travel experience?  In the weeks since my last post, I’ve had a few mishaps while commuting to, or traveling for, work. I ran into more car trouble than I care to remember, tripped over my own gym bag while running into the office, and had an embarrassing run-in with airport security. So, I’ve been left wondering—what could make my morning commutes and my future travel experiences run smoothly and safely?

Good Days Start With Planning

We all have lousy days, and last week I had one of my lousiest. I embarrassed myself in a meeting, destroyed my company laptop and locked myself out of my car. My day began like any other. I got up and showered, brushed my teeth and then headed for the door. Seems like a perfect morning. So what went wrong?

Bipartisanship Means Everyone Wins

At Celanese, responsible chemistry and innovation are what we strive for.   And as leaders in our industry we need to foster every possible opportunity to encourage our company’s continued growth and expansion. Which is why in the last several months the news out of Washington, DC is encouraging and may signal a new day for Celanese and chemical management in our country.

What My Drive To Work Taught Me About The Internet Of Tomorrow

It is not uncommon for my conversations with Gen Xers and Baby Boomers to touch on the idea that technology might hamper our ability to connect with others.

I guess it is because I work in enterprise Information Technology (IT). Conversations tend to shift toward technology and a lot of people only see the consumer side of the industry – a side dominated by social media. It’s probably natural to wonder why everyone seems to be focused on a smartphone instead of physically interacting with the world around them. It’s like talking about the weather –a topic none of us will really disagree on.

“Yes, it is hot outside.” “Yes, two kids might stand next to each other and communicate via text message instead of actually talking.”…

Celanese Helping To Make China Safer

Three years ago Celanese entered into a joint working relationship with China’s State Administration of Worker Safety (SAWS), the agency that regulates industrial health and safety in that country. Our purpose was to provide expertise in the area of process safety and help guide SAWS in enacting process safety regulations. Presently, China has no process safety regulations while most of the western world has process safety regulations such as the EU SEVESO, US PSM, and Mexico NOM standards. Since the goal of process safety is to prevent hazardous chemical releases, our participation in this effort will ultimately help save…

Five Security Tips For The Holidays

As the holiday season approaches, it is that time of year when crime tends to rise. And although the list of security tips listed below is nothing new, it’s a good idea to remind ourselves of these useful tips to ensure we are not victims of identity theft, digital fraud or any other sort of crime.

Tip 1: Keep your money and credit cards safe.

While you are out shopping for gifts, make sure your cash and credit cards are not readily visible or easily lifted.  For the ladies, this means keeping your purse closed at all times and for the men keeping your wallet near your body where you can feel it.

Tip 2: Email scams

Do not click on links embedded in your email or open attachments from random sites or people unless you are absolutely sure it is a legitimate email.  This is how malware can end up installed on your PC for the purposes of stealing your identity or learning more about you and your…
